ACFE Knoxville had the pleasure of hosting FBI Special Agent Mark Miller today for an engaging presentation on fraud and cyber crime cases he has worked throughout his career.
Mark shared cases involving stolen donor funds at a university, theft of approximately 6,000 personal purchases on a corporate card, and the misappropriation of COVID-era government loans by an aviation company.
The second half focused on Artificial Intelligence in cyber crime, including human trafficking scams and the use of AI-generated emails, images, audio, and video. Mark also shared a local Knoxville case involving a phishing attack that resulted in a $1.5 million wire transfer. Mark discussed the FBI’s Internet Crime Complaint Center (IC3) and shared that victims of internet crime can report incidents at IC3.gov.
We’re grateful to Mark for sharing his expertise and experiences with our chapter, along with a few memorable experiences, including that the CPA exam ranks somewhere below getting pepper sprayed on his list of preferred experiences.
