Cryptocurrency 101 for Investigators is a half‑day training by ACFE Knoxville Chapter #128, featuring our speaker Jason Conboy, Homeland Security Resident Agent in Charge. An introduction on how to investigate crimes involving cryptocurrencies. The training will cover how cryptocurrency works, how criminals misuse digital assets, and the investigative techniques needed to build strong crypto‑related cases.

About Our Speaker

Homeland Security Investigations (HSI) Resident Agent in Charge (RAC) Jason Conboy began his law enforcement career with HSI in 2007. His current position is the supervisor for the HSI Knoxville field office. In this role, RAC Conboy is responsible for management of all criminal investigations, operations, and administrative functions for HSI Knoxville which covers 14 counties in eastern Tennessee. RAC Conboy was previously assigned as a Cyber Investigations Liaison assigned to HSI Ottawa, Canada at the U.S. Embassy. His portfolio included supporting criminal investigations for transnational cybercrime to include network intrusion, ransomware, and other cyber crimes to include online crimes against children. Before joining HSI Ottawa in August 2021, RAC Conboy was assigned to the HSI Cyber Crimes Center (C3), Network Intrusion Section, in Fairfax, VA where he was tasked with building out the tools, technology, and training for cyber investigations.

From 2012 – 2019, RAC Conboy was assigned to the newly established HSI Hendersonville, North Carolina field office. RAC Conboy led numerous successful investigations that targeted child exploitation offenders, cyber criminals, and money launderers. RAC Conboy led an investigation involving the illicit use of cryptocurrency to purchase deadly fentanyl from dark net markets. From 2008 – 2012, RAC Conboy was assigned to HSI Miami and served in investigative groups at the Miami International Airport and the Marine Border Enforcement Security Taskforce. RAC Conboy holds a Criminal Justice degree from the University of Central Florida and multiple industry level certifications for cryptocurrency investigations and cybersecurity. RAC Conboy shares his knowledge and expertise by training local, state, and federal law enforcement on the tactics, techniques, and tools cyber criminals use to facilitate transnational crime.
